PORT GAVERNE TO ROCK Stage 21 (4th July 2008)

We stayed at an excellent B&B in and caught the #584 bus to , starting to walk at 10.15. follows shortly with good views of the harbour. Weather was dull but dry at the start with strong SW wind. Although not a clear day was still visible up the coast. There are 3 or 4 steep valleys before , a tiny village (with only a tap!) at the top of a narrow inlet. 2 deserted beaches are below the path then it climbs up past spectacular Lundy Hole and a sweeping springy path all the way to . The path goes sharply south with a gentle descent to (facilities behind a surf beach). We were now walking into driving rain on a broad path past , followed by a walk on firm sand to right of , then a wet struggle to the ferry point at Rock (we sheltered in the pub for an hour). A 1 mile walk up a busy road brought us to the bus stop at the Clock Garage. The 584 bus took us to by 18.30.

Total time 6 hours. Total distance walked 13.5 miles, 21.5km. Ascent 795m

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
