BUDE TO WIDEMOUTH BAY Stage 17 (6th June 2008)

We left the large car park by the Tourist Information Office, keeping left to cross the canal, turning right onto Breakwater Rd. The signed SWCP path goes up the hill towards the memorial at . We followed the cliff top past until the path rejoined the coast road for a while, then the path leaves it, staying close all the way down to (pronounced ‘Widmuth’) . We had walked a mere 3.5 miles from Bude, in perfect walking weather, sunshine with a few fluffy clouds, not too hot. After a drink and snack at the pub we were in time for the 15.33 bus #595 to . We stayed in a small but perfectly green self catering cottage in the centre of the town which has at least five evening eating possibilities.

Total distance walked 3.5 miles (5.6km) Total time 2.5 hours Ascent 265m

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
