BUCKS MILLS to WESTWARD HO! Stage 12 (17th August 2007)

We took bus #319 at 9.00 to . First we had to walk down a steep road into , a remote hamlet in a narrow coastal valley, to meet up with the SWCP. After a steep climb east from here a walk through woodland brought us to , another steep valley with stunning views up the coast to . After this the walk is through more open country, mainly on the cliff-top with occasional descents almost to sea level. At Greencliff the path is along the pebble beach for about 20 metres before steep steps take you back to the cliff top. The last 2 miles into are along the disused railway line. Then we had a cream tea in the Tea on the Green café for the second day running.
Total time (including stops) around 5.0 hours. Distance 12.9 km. Ascent 860m

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
