BRAUNTON to BARNSTAPLE Stage 9 (29th July 2007)

After heavy overnight rain the weather turned fine again and we left for a level walk into , along the edge of the Taw estuary. First it is necessary to walk past the large Army Barracks. The estuary walk is very easy, on a tarmac path, following the route of the old railway line most of the way. We saw lots of waders including curlews, oyster catchers, herons and egrets.
Total time (including stops) around 4.0 hours. Length of walk: 13.2km Ascent on walk 64m

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
