We left the cottage at 9.00 and walked from Lynton church around the coast path to the (spotting a feral goat on the way). Through the valley we followed a (quiet) tarmac road all the way past (some kind of religious retreat) to (no pub). Again the entire walk has excellent coastal views. After Woody Bay the coastline becomes even more dramatic (here we saw a deer right on the path and raptor/crow scuffles in the sky) before a very steep sided valley, , is reached (with former limekiln at sea level). Then we headed inland to the pub (arriving at 12.20 after several stops along the walk to admire views etc.). We had lunch there and made a pay-phone call (NB no mobile coverage!) to Luke’s Taxi which arrived promptly at 13.30 to take us back to .
Total time (including stops) around 3.5 hours. Length of walk: 10.0km Ascent on walk 2826 feet (= 893m total).
The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
