COUNTY GATE TO LYNMOUTH Stage 3 (22nd April 2007)

Taking the bus #300 from Lyndale Coach Park, at 11:05 to , we walked from there to the SWCP then along the coast. There is a steep descent to the SWCP from County Gate then a cliff walk through scrubby woodland, with excellent coast views, until when the path heads uphill inland near the road to the lighthouse. The open path next goes over Foreland Point and almost to Countisbury Church before following close to the A39 for the descent into Lynmouth. The last stretch is in Blacklands Wood, next to the shore.

Total time (including stops) around 3.5 hours. Length of walk 10.3km Ascent on walk 1971 feet = 592m.

The South West Coast Path is the longest of the official UK National Trails, running from Minehead in Somerset round the English south west peninsula coast to Poole in Dorset. The total length is just over 1000 kilometres or, more precisely, 630 miles. Only very dedicated walkers could contemplate completing the whole walk in one go, although plenty of people have done just this. Received opinion is that it would take around 6 weeks, even for the most dedicated.
